What can I look up?

The tool accepts the product numbers printed under retail barcodes, all of which are GTINs (Global Trade Item Numbers) defined by GS1:

  • UPC-A (GTIN-12) – the 12-digit code used in the US and Canada
  • UPC-E – the compressed 8-digit form found on small packages
  • EAN-13 (GTIN-13) – the 13-digit code used in most other countries
  • EAN-8 (GTIN-8) – the short version for small products
  • ISBN – book numbers starting with 978 or 979, printed as EAN-13 barcodes

A UPC is a GTIN-13 with a leading zero, so the same product can be found by either number.

How to scan a UPC barcode with your phone

Tap Scan with camera, allow camera access, and point your phone at the barcode. The number is detected automatically and the product is looked up. Scanning runs entirely in your browser – no app to install. The scanner is built with [STRICH](https://strich.io/), our barcode scanning SDK for web apps.

Why didn't my barcode return a result?

  • The product isn't in the GO-UPC database. Coverage is broad but not complete, especially for regional or very new products.
  • It's an in-store code. Barcodes starting with 2 (UPC) or 20–29 (EAN) are restricted-circulation numbers that retailers assign internally, for example for items sold by weight. They aren't globally unique and can't be looked up.
  • It's a store SKU, not a GTIN. SKUs are internal to each retailer and aren't listed in public barcode databases.
  • It's a shipping or case code. GTIN-14 codes on outer cartons (often ITF-14 barcodes) identify packaging levels, not individual retail items.
